Marcia Wood Gallery

Kim Oulette is an artist in Decatur, Georgia whose abstract figurative paintings are the subject of her solo exhibition "New Works" opening at Marcia Wood Gallery on June 25, 2022. Ouellette’s new body of paintings of sumi ink and acrylic on canvas are fluid and rhythmic compositions of patterns, shapes and color. The artist states these works represent acts of improvisation through a formal language that strives for a figurative cohesion short of representation.

Steven Charles was born in Birkenhead, England, in 1967 and immigrated to North Texas in the late 1970’s. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas in 1994, and he gained his Master of Fine Arts degree from The Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 1996. Shortly thereafter he moved to New York, where he was a Visiting Artist Lecturer at the School of Visual Art in 2003 and 2015. His work has been nationally exhibited in galleries and museums on the East and West Coasts, as well as abroad in Canada and Spain. Most notably he was represented for many years by Pierogi and Marlborough Galleries in New York City. He has been the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and an Artist’s Fellowship from The New York Foundation for the Arts. His work has been reviewed in publications such as, Art in America, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Vice among others.

Deborah Dancy is a multi-media abstract artist, whose paintings, drawings, digital photography and sculptural objects examine and mine abstraction’s potential to move across mediums and materials exploring subtlety and confrontation. Deborah Dancy retired in 2018 as Professor Emeritus of art at the University of Connecticut where she was on the faculty in the Department of Art and Art History since 1981. She has received numerous significant honors and awards, including: a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, New England Foundation for the Arts/NEA Individual Artist Grant, Nexus Press Artist Book Project Award, Visual Studies Artist Book Project Residency Grant, The American Antiquarian Society’s William Randolph Hearst Fellowship, a YADDO Fellow, Women’s Studio Workshop Residency Grant, Connecticut Commission of the Arts Artist Grant, as well as a Connecticut Book Award Illustration Nominee.

María Korol's artistic practice is firmly rooted in drawing and painting, including explorations in three-dimensional formats and interdisciplinary collaborations. She is interested in storytelling and imagination, history and its distortions, and humor. She was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1980 and moved to the United States in 2004. Korol has shown her paintings and drawings nationally and internationally in places like Bogotá, New York, Berlin, and Atlanta, among other cities. Her artwork is in numerous private collections and in those of the University of California-Irvine and Agnes Scott College. She is a distinguished fellow of the Junge Akademie der Künste, the Hambidge Center, and the Women's Art Institute. She is the recipient of the 2020 Edge Award with the Forward Arts Foundation, and was selected for The Creatives Project and the Hughley Fellowship. Based in Atlanta, she is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Morehouse College.

Originally from Chicago Engel moved to Athens, GA in 1993. Her work has shown and been reviewed nationally since 1986 in galleries, art fairs and museums. Engel's work is held in private collections as well as institutions including Children’s Healthcare of Scottish Rite in Atlanta, The Arthur Blank Family Foundation, the Detroit Zoo, the Disney Corporation the President’s Collection of the University of Georgia and the United States Embassy, Rome, Italy. Museum exhibitions include Macon Museum of Arts & Sciences, Macon, GA, Museum of Contemporary Art, Atlanta, GA, Huntsville Museum of Art, Huntsville, AL, Asheville Museum of Art, Asheville, NC, and Fine Arts Museum of the South, Mobile, AL. The sculptures are created using wire, mesh, plaster, epoxy and objects. Each piece is built from the paws or hooves up, is hollow and unique. Engel's aspiration is to create whimsical, animated creatures using gesture and ‘movement’ to capture a presence she feel animals possess.

Robert Sagerman earned his M.A. in Painting and M.A. in Art History from the Pratt Institute in 1998, his M.A. in Religious Studies in 2000 from New York University and his Ph.D. in Hebrew and Judaic Studies from New York University in 2008. Sagerman has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally in museums, galleries and art fairs since 1993.

Timothy McDowell exhibits across the United States and internationally in galleries, museums and biennials, including the Nicolaysen Museum of Art, Casper, WY, The Museum of Modern Art of Jacksonville, FL, the Phoenix Museum of Art, Phoenix, AZ, the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA, the 5th Cuenca Biennial of Painting, Cuenca, Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador, and the Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea (Florence, Italy). His work is in numerous private, corporate and museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art Prints and Drawings Collection, NY. Timothy McDowell resides in Noank, Connecticut, and has been an instructor at Connecticut College since 1981.

Julia Venske and Gregor Spänle, born in 1971 and 1969 respectively, live and work in New York and Munich. They began collaborating on artwork in 1991. Their sculpture and installation work has been shown in museums, galleries and art fairs worldwide, including Bolivia, India, Italy, Germany, Spain, the Congo, Switzerland, Australia, Argentina, Japan, Belgium, Singapore, Hong Kong, and South Africa, as well as throughout the United States. Since 1997they have been exhibiting regularly with Margaret Thatcher Projetcts, New York, Marcia Wood Gallery, Atlanta, Robert Drees Gallery, Hannover, Conny Dietzschold Gallery, Sydney, Faessler & Ochsner Gallery, Zurich and Ana Serratosa Arte, Valencia.

David Humphrey received a BFA from Maryland Institute, College of Art in 1977 and a MA from New York University in 1980. He has shown nationally and internationally and he has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rome Prize and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Award, among others. Humphrey wrote a column for “Art Issues” from 1989-2002 and has written extensively on art for exhibition catalogs and art periodicals, including Art in America and Flash. An anthology of his writing, Blind Handshake, was released in 2009 by Periscope Publishing. A self-titled monograph of his paintings was published by Fredericks and Freiser in 2020. Humphrey is an instructor at Columbia University in the MFA program. His work is in collections including Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA, Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, OH, Denver Art Museum, CO, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN among others. Humphrey has shown at Marcia Wood Gallery since 2014.
